Stonington in the Off-Season: Why November and December Are the Coast’s Best-Kept Secret
Fireplaces, a lobster trap Christmas tree, and a quiet harborfront village. Plan a November or December romantic escape to the Inn at Stonington

Summer gets the credit, but ask anyone who lives in Stonington Borough when the village looks its best, and you may hear a different answer.
The crowds thin, the harbor goes silver, and the whole place settles into a hush that makes you want to linger.
If you’ve only ever visited in July, consider this your invitation to see the other Stonington.
A Village Dressed for the Season
Stonington Borough doesn’t need much help looking like a holiday card.
The narrow streets, the 19th-century captains’ houses, and the working waterfront already do most of the work.
Come late November, the village adds its own touches, and one of them is unlike anything you’ll see elsewhere.
The Lobster Trap Tree. Stonington’s town dock hosts a towering Christmas tree built from stacked lobster traps, a nod to the fishing families who have shaped this town for generations.
The lighting ceremony is scheduled for November 20, 2026.
After dark, the tree glows against the water, and it’s worth the short stroll from the Inn.
Bring a camera and a warm scarf.
Holiday shopping on foot. Water Street’s independent shops and galleries are the opposite of a mall in December.
Expect local makers, one-of-a-kind finds, and shopkeepers who will wrap your gift while you chat.
The Borough’s seasonal stroll and window-decorating traditions typically arrive in early December, so check the Borough’s events calendar for this year’s dates.
Nearby festivities.
Just down the road in Mystic, Santa arrives by tugboat on November 28, 2026, followed by a lighted boat parade.
Stonington’s Holiday Magic Market at the Haley Mansion is also listed for November 29, 2026.
Olde Mistick Village traditionally puts up a dazzling light display from late November into January.
Why Winter Suits an Inn at Stonington Romantic Getaway
There’s a reason Yankee Magazine once recommended winter ocean weekends here: the season rewards people who want to slow down.
- Fireplaces and soaking tubs. Many of our rooms offer in-room gas fireplaces and soaking tubs. After a brisk walk along the harbor, there’s no better place to be than a deep bath, a crackling fire, and nowhere to go.
- Room to breathe. Without the summer bustle, the Borough feels like your own private village. Tables are easier to book, sidewalks are quiet, and the pace matches the tide.
- Moody, beautiful light. Low winter sun, mist over Fishers Island Sound, and boats rocking at their moorings make some of the best scenery of the year. Photographers and painters have long known this.
- Cozy evenings. Come back from dinner or a gallery stroll, settle in with a glass of wine, and let the day wind down.
A Sample Winter Weekend
Friday: Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your room. Take a walk along Water Street as the shops light up, then have dinner in the Borough.
Saturday: Linger over a slow morning, then head out for a bundled-up walk to the lighthouse museum and the point. Spend the afternoon browsing galleries and gift shops. If your visit lines up with the tree lighting, catch the glow at the town dock at dusk.
Sunday: Take one last slow stroll along the water, perhaps with a coffee in hand, before heading home rested.
Make It Your Own: Ideas for the Season
- A pre-holiday reset. Escape the planning and the to-do lists the weekend before the rush.
- An early anniversary or birthday. Celebrate somewhere that feels like a gift in itself.
- A holiday present for two. Give an experience instead of another sweater. Ask us about gift certificates.
- A New Year’s retreat. Start the year somewhere peaceful with a view of the water.
